Improving Thermal Comfort in Warm Climates

In the summer months, many buildings struggle with thermal discomfort. Between the sun and humid air, areas with multiple windows can become unpleasant if considerations aren’t made during the build process. Using the correct window frames drastically improves thermal comfort during warm months.

Aluminum window frames are an excellent choice for strength and low-maintenance, but on their own, they are a poor insulating material. In order to meet thermal requirements, aluminum framing should be thermally broken, or thermally improved, by separating the interior and exterior of the frame or window.

How Aluminum Framing Improves Thermal Comfort

According to Linetec, thermally improved aluminum framing members can be a way to increase thermal comfort for building occupants. Thermally improved aluminum framing members can:

  • Help meet model energy codes for new construction
  • Contribute to efficient building performance when renovating existing buildings
  • Reduce the HVAC load for optimally sized equipment and operation
  • Save energy costs, conserve resources and reduce associated emissions

How to Identify the Correct Thermal Improvement Methods

Linetec further defines what specifics to look for in aluminum framing members:

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association details stringent industry standards of the two thermal improvement methods in AAMA QAG-2, “Voluntary Quality Assurance Processing Guide for Polyamide Thermal Barriers” and QAG-1, “Quality Assurance Processing Guide for Poured and Debridged Polyurethane Thermal Barriers.”

Polyamide thermal strut (insulating strips) systems not only meet these qualifications but are the highest performing thermal barrier system, and available in numerous shapes and profiles, including hollow profiles, offset profiles, and screw spline. The thermal strut also enables the architect to specify products with split finishes to provide a customized look for a building.

Thermal comfort becomes even more important in warm climates to ensure a happy and healthy indoor environment. Using thermally improved aluminum window frames will ensure cool and inviting buildings.
