Acoustic Windows “Quiet” Airport Noise at Four Atlanta Airport Hotels
07/14/2023
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in the world, with nearly 100 billion passengers a year. This volume of traffic also means a greater volume of noise. For nearby businesses and hotels, mitigating this noise to ensure acoustic comfort is critical – and challenging. St. Cloud Window tackled this challenge with windows for the construction of four Marriott hotels, all located on and connected by the airport’s Sky Tramway.
The Hotels
With the hotels – Springhill Suites, Marriott Gateway, Renaissance Gateway, and AC Marriott – only a short tram ride from the airport gate area, they were a welcome addition to busy travelers, however, with the hotels being built in close proximity to the runways, interstate highways, and freight lines, noise mitigation was the top concern.
The Challenge
For Marriott to successfully develop hotels next to the Atlanta airport, they needed windows that could block out the constant noise from airplane takeoffs and landings, which can reach highs of 140 decibels – significantly higher than the recommended average for human safety of 70 decibels. Offering a calm quiet environment and keeping guests comfortable is an integral part of the Marriott brand and standards.
The Solution
St. Cloud Window SCW900 Series windows were selected for their superior performance. The SCW900 Series has long been the benchmark of St. Cloud Window’s superior window system providing the Luxury of Quiet™ and designed for performance over the long term with exceptional acoustic attenuation and high-performance thermal efficiency.
A combined total of over 1100 high-acoustic triple-glazed fixed windows were custom manufactured for the four hotels. The AC Marriott and the Marriott Gateway hotels were fitted with SCW960-A7 windows with a 7-inch frame depth, and the Springhill and Renaissance hotel windows have 5-inch SCW960 windows. SCW900 Series windows provide the required, superior acoustic performance with sound transmission ratings as high as STC 54 & OITC 43 to keep the interior spaces quiet.
The Result
The SCW900 Series created a comfortable, quiet, and convenient stay for hotel guests.
“Great place to stay and 90 seconds from ATL – I would definitely stay here again, what stood out to me the most, is the noise ordinance level, with this hotel being so close to the airport, I did not hear any airplanes landing or taking off… unless I was outside…”
“Excellent choice of hotel for an overnight stay – We arrived at the hotel after a long flight. It was so easy to find the sky train to the hotel. There was no aircraft noise which surprised us as aircraft were taking over head. Would definitely stay here again.”
