Dunbar Senior High School
Project Location: Washington, DC
The SCW9000 acoustic curtain wall in the Dunbar High School auditorium creates a visual portal to the outside while providing the flow of natural light and the luxury of quiet for the creativity inside.
The design challenge was to create a facility that honors the past and the present, could overcome the challenges of the site, and also carefully engage the surrounding neighborhood through entry locations, views, and vistas, to connect the school and staff to the community.
Located midst of the historic and busy street grid, just two blocks from the busy intersection of New Jersey and New York avenues, Dunbar Senior High School was the country’s first high school for African Americans, founded in 1870.
