Historic Window Replacement in John Michael Kohler House

12/09/2019

The best renovation projects preserve a building’s original history while improving it for modern use, which is why the John Michael Kohler Art Center approached St. Cloud Window to replace the windows in the historic John Michael Kohler House.

About John Michael Kohler House

The John Michael Kohler house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center complex. The house was originally constructed in 1882 and remodeled in 1920. The house includes several bay windows and multi-colored windows.

The Challenge

Since the John Michael Kohler House is designated as a historic building, it was vital that the replacement windows retain the look of the original windows. Faced with harsh midwestern winters, it was also a goal to ensure the new windows would provide modern thermal energy efficiency. Additionally, the building is still in use so the windows needed to serve practical applications as well. Finally, the project needed to be completed between gallery rotations in order to not be disruptive.

The Solution

In keeping with the historically significant building, SCW3000 Series historic windows were custom-designed to fit the original narrow openings and to match the original color – coral exterior and white interior frames with gray muntin grids. The SCW3000 Series windows maintained the building’s historic integrity while providing modern thermal energy efficiency. The total scope of the project was 23 fixed windows.

The Result

The John Michael Kohler House retains its historic charm while also accommodating modern needs. As a part of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the building is now ready to house patrons and art exhibits in thermal comfort and beautiful, historic design.
