What Are the Parts of Windows?

01/06/2023

Windows are more complex than expected. They come in countless shapes and sizes, from very small and intricate, to large and majestic, and may be manufactured of many different materials, yet most are made of the same components. Terms for these components can be confusing, but knowing the right names for parts of a window can help select the window to meet the building’s needs. The two main pieces of a window are the frame and the sash.

Window Frame

A window frame is the framework that surrounds and supports the entire window system. Frame sizes vary and range from standard dimensions to custom-designed. The head, jamb, and sill make up the window frame.

  • Head – is the main horizontal part forming the top of the window frame.
  • Jambs – are the main vertical parts forming the sides of a window frame.
  • Sill – is the main horizontal part forming the bottom of the frame of a window.

Window Sash

The sash is the area inside the frame, the part that holds the glass. The sash may or may not move. For a single-hung window, the lower sash is the piece that slides to open the window. The sash has several components.

  • Rails – are the horizontal sections of the sash.
  • Stiles – are the vertical sections of the sash.
  • Glass – is inside the sash, also referred to as the windowpane.

Knowing window terminology helps with identifying the building’s needs and selecting windows to best meet its requirements.
