How to Maximize Workplace Productivity

Whether beginning a new commercial construction project or replacing windows in an existing building, maximizing productivity is a critical part of the planning process. Workplace productivity generally refers to how much work is accomplished, in a particular time period. So when projects are completed ahead of schedule and under budget, they result in higher productivity and higher profit margins.

In a Construct Connect article, Kendall Jones outlines the nine ways to improve job site productivity.

Planning & Scheduling

Create a construction plan once the contract is in hand. Identify a) tasks, b) order of the tasks, and c) resources – labor, tools, equipment, and materials – for each task. Layout a construction schedule with start and completion dates. Work with suppliers and subcontractors as well as your own workforce to set material quantities and arrival dates.

Communication

Establish a communication procedure. Set expectations for how often and with whom. Regular communications keep the project on track and can identify issues before they cause any delays.

Supervision

Overseeing the day-to-day operations and tracking track of material and labor costs are critical to identifying potential problems and devising timely solutions.

Safety

Share site-specific safety plans with everyone on the job site and set expectations that it is to be followed by everyone.

Quality

Set quality standards and lead by example. Poor workmanship can lead to costly rework, unexpected spending, and delays. Workers who take pride in their work tend to be more productive.

Training

Train employees to follow best practices. Investing in their success increases productivity. Employees who know how to do the work correctly and safely increase quality and efficiency.

Equipment

Schedule equipment to be delivered to the job site before construction begins. Plan maintenance ahead of time to avoid lost productivity from it being taken out of service.

Jobsite Layout

Consider where to set up areas for parking, material and equipment storage, toilet facilities, staging, job site trailers, and tool cribs. Careful planning can avoid workers from unnecessarily traipsing all over the job site for materials.

Technology

Utilize available software, mobile apps, telematics, GPS, 3D modeling, drones, and other tech tools to create great efficiencies. These technologies allow construction companies to operate in hard-to-reach places, with greater accuracy, and increased safety for workers.
